I’ve uploaded a few less sounds than normal this week due to having some family commitments, but over 200 new have been uploaded. As always they can be downloaded for free. Here is a small list of just some of the new releases this week.
Sometimes you get an idea for a new set of sound effects from the most unexpected of places or situations. Just the other day my daughter came home from school with a prize she’d won at a raffle, which was a ball you squeeze and it expands into some weird gel like balloon. Well it was until my son managed to grab it and pop it. After a few tantrums, my daughter decided the now slimy but solid mass was actually more fun and kept it in a small glass. When she decided to shake it right next to my ear, I realised it would make a fantastic slime sound, like the slime from the film Flubber!
I had to experiment with many different movements and on and in many different surfaces and receptacles to get useful sounds. In fact the best came from the original glass my daughter had it in. So if you need slime sound effects, you can download these free here.
We already had a few of these, but when I was given a whistle from a friend to record, I thought it’d be rude not to. The problem with recording these is they produce such a loud sound, you can’t record them too close up, but recording them further away often results in capturing reverberation from surrounding surfaces. The best results I found come from going to a large field and recording the whistle at around 2 or 3 metres distance.
Stone scrapes on gritty plastic surfaces
This one was a request via email from one of our visitors who needed the sound of a stone or rock scraping on a gritty plastic surface. I never did find out what they were wanting it for, but it was pretty easy to record. I simply rubbed some salt on a variety of plastic surfaces and scraped the stone over the top. From experience, I know that salt works well for this purpose and you often get the best results. The visitor ended up liking a variation where the stone is rubbed around inside a plastic bucket. These may be a strange set of noises, but if you ever need them, just search the library and you’ll find them!
Squeaks and creaks of stretched plastic tape
This was a noise I heard when my wife was packaging up a parcel to send off. She ripped a long strip of sticky tape from the roll but then realised she needed to put an address label on the box first. So she stuck each end of the tape across a door while she put the label on. In the meantime, I just wondered what it would sound like if I rubbed my finger across it. Being such a great sound, I just had to replicate it so I did the same thing in the studio. Because of the nature of the sound effects, I placed them into the office category, but with a little tweaking, they’d be great for horror or even cartoon sounds. Just do a search for ‘tape squeak’ and you’ll find them.
More requests being created today
That’s all for now. I’m off to try and create a few more of the requests that have been coming in. If you have a sound you need creating, I am happy to try and create or record it for free. Just post a request in the forum from the main menu.
